Pensioner arrested following ‘attempted rape’ of boy, 12, in shopping centre toilets

Police are investigating an incident in which a 12-year-old boy was allegedly sexually attacked by a pensioner in the toilets of a shopping centre.

A 68-year-old man was arrested after he approached the boy in Manchester’s Arndale Centre and attempted to rape him, officers said.

It happened at around 4.50pm on October 17, during which witnesses reportedly raised the alarm.

Police managed to track the child down and he is now being spoken to by ‘specially trained officers.’

‘I want to reassure the public that this does appear to be an isolated incident but we are treating the report extremely seriously,’ detective sergeant Mark Tiffany from the Serious Sexual Offences Unit told the Daily Mirror.

‘We have already arrested a man but would urge the public to remain vigilant and if anyone knows anything about what happened or saw anything suspicious around 4.30pm please call police.’

The investigation is ongoing but anyone with information is urged to call the police on 0161 856 1911 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
